Our story

Six decades of faith on Milwaukee’s north side.

In 1962, Pastor Charles Upchurch founded El-Shaddai Church of God in Christ in his home. The congregation grew so quickly that it moved to its first sanctuary, then to 27th and Chambers — at the time, the largest COGIC sanctuary in Milwaukee. Today, El-Shaddai continues to reach the lost, encourage the hopeless, and strengthen the weak through preaching, teaching, and prayer.

1962 Pastor Charles Upchurch founds El-Shaddai in his home.

Growth A first sanctuary, then 27th & Chambers — the largest COGIC sanctuary in Milwaukee at the time.

1993 Elder John Johnson begins 25 years of faithful leadership.

2019 Bishop C.H. McClelland installs Elder Maurice Hughes as Pastor.

Today Merging technology with holiness — moving forward in faith.

Our leadership

Pastor Maurice & Lady Afrika Hughes

Pastor Hughes has served El-Shaddai since 2002 and was installed as Pastor in February 2019. He serves Wisconsin Northwest Jurisdiction as Administrative Assistant and Executive Secretary under Bishop C.H. McClelland. Together, Pastor and Lady Hughes desire to see the saints live the Abundant Life as promised by God.
